V/RITUAL: Collective Complexity by Dennis Dizon

On October 21, 2020, participants took part in V/RITUAL: Collective Complexity, organized by Beyond Matter resident Dennis Dizon at Feministeerium in Tallinn. Dennis runs MATTERS OF, a platform that rethinks curatorial formats and audience engagement in institutional public programming.

Among the Yakuts of North Asia, the Niassans in Sumatra or the Visayans in pre-colonial Philippines, shamanic invocations in indigenous spiritual practices often involve ritual transformations of and with the body—trembling in violent fits, withdrawing to the forest, climbing trees or dancing to the point of exhaustion—abandoning the human condition for a transhuman existence. Exploring ecological conditions with the screen, the screening and curatorial workshop invited participants to write and create a collaborative ritual together; to respond with the senses between physical and virtual space.

The workshop included a screening of Patricia Domínguez’s film, Madre Drone, 2020, Commissioned by Centro Centro, Madrid, and Kiosko, Bolivia (2019).

The workshop took place within the framework of a new residency programme that is part of the large-scale international cooperation project BEYOND MATTER – Cultural Heritage on the Verge of Virtual Reality, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
