Panel Discussion “Matter, Non-Matter, Anti-Matter. Past Exhibitions as Digital Experiences” at Tallinn Art Hall, in the framework of Beyond Matter.
On Friday, November 19th, from 17:00 please join us for a panel discussion with artists Kristaps Ancāns, Laura Kuusk, and filmmaker and scholar Dr. Pia Tikka which will debate issues posed by the novel installation “Matter, Non-Matter, Anti-Matter” which showcases digital models of past exhibitions on a custom-made display as well as via Augmented Reality. Visitors are offered the possibility to interact with and navigate through the computer-based exhibition spaces displayed on screens. The installation will be introduced by Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás, initiator and head of the project Beyond Matter. The panel discussion will be moderated by Tallinn Art Hall curator Corina L. Apostol.
The installation experience and panel discussion event are free of charge. The event will be held in English, duration ca 1.5h.
Kristaps Ancāns is an artist whose practice investigates the confusion between humans, nature, and machines through a conceptual game with its own artificial intelligence. He works across media in fields of sculpture, text, installation which often contain a kinetic component. Ancāns was awarded the ‘Cecil Lewis Sculpture Scholarship’ and the ‘Helen Scott Lidgett Award’. He is the Head of the Master of Contemporary Art Program at the Estonian Academy of Arts and co-head of POST, interdisciplinary MA Program at the Art Academy of Latvia.
Laura Kuusk is an artist who in her practice uses photography, video, and installation to recycle anthropological visual (found) materials. She is interested in the decision-making mechanisms within the collective consciousness and experiments with the visual traces of bodily experiences and their connection to larger socio-political processes. Together with Camille Laurelli, Kuusk was the recipient of the Beyond Matter Residency in Spring 2021. Since 2015, Kuusk is an associate professor in the Photography Department at the Estonian Academy of Arts.
Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás has curated exhibitions at institutions of contemporary and media art worldwide since 2006, including at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media (Karlsruhe), Chronus Art Center (Shanghai), Ludwig Museum (Budapest) focusing on the genealogy and social impact of planetary computation and computer code, electronic surveillance and democracy, and synesthetic perception. Currently, she is acting head of the international collaboration project entitled Beyond Matter at ZKM | Karlsruhe.
Dr. Pia Tikka is a filmmaker and scholar whose research concerns the psychophysiological and emotional basis of cinematic systems. Dr. Tikka has directed the feature films Daughters of Yemanjá (1996) and Sand Bride (1998). She has also been part of the Academy of Finland-sponsored Enactive Cinema, winning such awards as the Möbius Prix Nordic prize for interactive storytelling in 2005. She is a Research Professor in the Centre of Excellence in Media Innovation and Digital Culture (MEDIT) at the Baltic Film, Media and Arts School, Tallinn University.
